The Vuelta Ciclista a Asturias 2022 will feature 15 teams, which will take part from April 29 to May 1 in the three stages of the round in which the reigning champion, the Colombian Nairo Quintana, is one of the contenders for the final triumph. The race maintains Alto del Acebo, in Cangas del Narcea, as the main mountain difficulty of the route, which will culminate with the return of the end of the Vuelta on Uría street in Oviedo.
The first stage will be held on Friday, April 29, starting in Oviedo and arriving in Pola de Lena, after covering 166 kilometers, including a first-class port, Alto de la Colladona. The next day, the second stage will take place, from Candás to Cangas del Narcea, of 199 kilometers, with Alto del Acebo, first class.
The Asturian round will conclude on Sunday 1 May with the dispute of the third stage, between Cangas del Narcea and Oviedo, 120 kilometers, in which the main mountain difficulty is El Violeo, second category. The Vuelta Asturias “Julio Álvarez Mendo” will feature 15 national and international teams on the starting line, highlighting the presence of two UCI World Tour teams, the Spanish Movistar Team and the Australian Bike Exchange-Jayco, in whose ranks Simon Yates plays.
Also the UCI Pro Teams Arkea Samsic teams, with Nairo Quintana, the last winner of the Vueltina, and Total Energies. Also in the pack will be the Continental Caja Rural Seguros RGA, Burgos BH, Euskaltel Euskadi, Kernpharma and Manuela Fundación teams, as well as the Eolo-Kometa Cycling Team (Fundación Contador), which competes under an Italian license.
In addition, four squads from Portugal will be filming on Asturian roads: Radio Popular Boavista, Efapel, Louletano and FC Porto; and the Colombian Team Medellín. Olympic champion Samuel Sánchez highlighted the return of the final stage of the Vuelta a Asturias to Uría Street in Oviedo, and pointed out that Alto del Acebo will “clarify” the classification, waiting for the “havoc” that will be the end in the Asturian capital.
For Santi Pérez, the Vuelta a Asturias hides “more than one trap door” in the first stage, and he pointed out that this year it is “more open” and predicts a “nice” ending on Calle Uría.
Coque Uría, who recalled that in last year's edition “from the beginning” Colombian Nairo Quintana was seen as the “strongest”, encouraged the dozens of children from the Colloto cycling school to continue practicing the sport of cycling, who were covering the presentation of the 64th edition of the Vuelta a Asturias.
The mayor of Oviedo, Alfredo Canteli; the Deputy Minister for Tourism of the Principality, Graciela Blanco, and the director of the Tour of Asturias, Cristina Álvarez, presented the competition at the event held at the Los Prados shopping center. Also in attendance were the technical director of the Vuelta a España, Fernando Escartín, and the Asturian cyclists Samuel Sánchez, Santi Pérez and Coque Uría, as well as the mayors of the municipalities that are the start or finish line of the Asturian round.
