In recent hours, the National Institute for Drug and Food Surveillance (Invima) has launched a health alert for the fraudulent marketing of “NOVAFOR-NOVACOLLAGEN-NOVAFIB” products on digital platforms and advertising guidelines. This consists of a powdered and/or granulated food based on pea protein distributed by the company JM Salud y Belleza.
In their statement, Invima detailed that the problem with this product is that it is promoted as a treatment for the management of joint pain, declaring health, preventive, curative and/or therapeutic properties, which leads to non-compliance with current health legislation (articles 272 and 274 of Law 9 of 1979 and the resolution 5109 of 2005 — articles 4 and 5).
The entity also added the profiles and links of the publications that were promoting this product in this way. However, what has caught the attention of this case is that the company that distributes this powdered food belongs to businessman José Millán, who in recent days was reported for mistreating his employees.
About NOVAFOR-NOVACOLLAGEN-NOVAFIB, Invima made several recommendations to consumers and health secretaries throughout the country. First of all, “Invima asks the general population to refrain from purchasing the products related to this alert” and recommended that those who have purchased Novafor to suspend consumption.
They also asked consumers to inform the relevant authorities whether they know where these products are made, packaged, distributed or marketed. Finally, they reminded Colombians that they can always consult their website permanently for information related to products that may affect the health of citizens.
On the other hand, they recommended that the country's secretaries of health carry out an active search for products related to the alert and, in the same way, inspection, surveillance and control activities in competitive establishments that could potentially market these products and take the sanitary measures required. Instead, also that they spread this alert and inform Invima in case they find these products.
On José Millán there are several videos that went viral on social networks, in which it is evident that his employees were victims of abuse and workplace harassment by him. In a dialogue with Blu Radio, RedFem founder Julieth Hernández said that “victims don't want to report it because they are very afraid. It is a friend of one of the employees who asked us to file the complaint.”
This audiovisual material was shared on Instagram where it is possible to see and hear the insults and aggression of the subject against women who work for his company.
In the videos mentioned above, evidence remained of the moment when the man yells at the women he works with and threatens to extend his working hours until late at night. Likewise, at one point the owner of JM Salud y Belleza is also seen abruptly approaching one of the workers to verbally assault her.
After the reaction of public opinion, this March 16, the businessman decided to respond through a statement, where he apologizes for what happened and clarifies that the videos are from 2020. He further adds: “Through this document I offer a public apology and invoke the forgiveness of all of you, but above all of the affected Karen Yesenia Poveda Porras for any kind of grievance that my misbehavior may have caused her”.
José Millán says in the statement that due to his violence in 2020 he had to go to the psychologist, where he was diagnosed with a mental problem, which, according to him, would explain the abuse he caused women at work.
