PARIS (AP) — Algeria called its ambassador to Spain for consultations to protest its decision to support a Moroccan plan to give autonomy to Western Sahara.
The former Spanish colony is disputed between Morocco and an Algerian-backed independence group called the Polisario Front.
Algeria condemned the Spanish measure, and on Saturday issued a statement stating that Spain had so far demonstrated neutrality in the conflict.
Algeria began to support the Frente Polisario after Morocco annexed Western Sahara in 1975.
On Friday, Spain supported a Moroccan proposal to let Western Sahara function autonomously under Moroccan government, calling it a serious and credible initiative to resolve the dispute.
The Frente Polisario accused Spain of making a serious mistake and continued to demand a referendum in the area to decide on eventual independence.
An official from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Saturday night that Madrid had already informed Algeria of its position.
He added that for Spain, Algeria is a strategic partner with which he wants to have good relations.
