A foreign citizen was arrested after robbing an escort lady he had summoned in Bogotá. The events took place in the Galerías neighborhood in the town of Teusaquillo, the woman agreed with Gerson José Rojas Chirinos, the accused, to an appointment in this sector. Upon arriving at the scene, Rojas threatened the escort with a firearm and told her that she would shoot if she didn't give her all her money.

Faced with this situation, the woman cried for help and the citizen was detained by the community and captured in flagrante by uniformed members of the National Police. They proceeded to carry out a search where they found the firearm and the stolen money.

A prosecutor at the Immediate Reaction Unit (URI) in the town of Puente Aranda made a charge for the crime of qualified theft and the manufacture, trafficking, carrying or possession of firearms or ammunition. Gerson Rojas pleaded not guilty to these charges. The Prosecutor's Office proceeded to request an assurance measure in a prison establishment, which was endorsed by a judge with a guarantee control function.

Recently, the inhabitants of the Galerías neighborhood had protested against the constant robberies, some that have resulted in the murder of the victim, such as the case of the United Nations communicator Natalia Castillo, who was killed a month ago, after two men rebuked her to steal her cell phone.

This is not only experienced by people on the street, even locals have been robbed, recently in some restaurants and gastrobars not only in the neighborhood, but also in the town of Teusaquillo. It seems that the measures are not enough, despite the security cameras and the accompaniment by the police.

At the Bogotá Ministry of Security, Coexistence and Justice, they are developing different strategies to reduce the rates of insecurity and theft in the city. For example, a few days ago, inspection, control and surveillance operations were carried out at mechanical workshops and auto parts premises in 7 locations; Barrios Unidos, Los Mártires, Kennedy, Antonio Nariño, Suba, Engativa and Puente Aranda; in which 24 preventive closures were carried out and 13 people were captured.

“We are going to continue these actions together with the Police with new elite groups that will strengthen our actions against theft, which is one of the crimes that most affects citizens,” said the Secretary of Security, Coexistence and Justice, Aníbal Fernández de Soto.

On the part of the Mayor's Office, they indicate that 1.4 billion pesos have been allocated to security; 6460 security cameras have been installed throughout Bogotá and that the capital is among the cities with the lowest homicide rates in the country.

But the problem of insecurity, although the district says it is decreasing, goes beyond an index of perception. A few days ago the councilor of the Radical Change Party, Rolando González, was robbed, also in the town of Teusaquillo, when two men on motorcycles approached the official and robbed him by armed forces his cell phone.

González explained that: “crime and the underworld have taken over the city” and asked Mayor Claudia López and Secretary Fernández to deliver results to the capital once and for all.
