New USOC Logos
The USOC has redesigned its logos for the USOC, U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams and Team USA.
The new logosfeaturethe American flag colors--red, white and blue -- and add the American flag to three of the logos.
"This redesign embodies a fresh look for the USOC and reflects our desire to work collaboratively with the IOC, our international counterparts and our many constituencies," USOC Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun said in a press release.
"The new logo is striking, appealing and offers us a timeless identity. The American flag is the most recognized symbol of our country, and putting it at the center of our marks signifies the importance of identifying with the history and spirit of our country," Blackmun said.
The U.S. Olympic Team’s original logo included USA above the Olympic rings. The new logo has ‘United States Olympic Team’ around the American flag and the Olympic rings. The USOC and U.S. Paralympic Team logos use similar designs.
The USOC also revamped Team USA’s logo. Although the logo does not use the Olympic rings, it is set in the Olympic shield and uses the stripes of the American flag as its background.
The USOC says it redesigned the logos in an effort to "enhance the USOC brand, create clear and meaningful marks, and outline consistent brand architecture for all USOC constituencies."
The logos were designed by FITCH marketing services.
Comcast and USOC Turn Off Channel Plans
Comcast and the USOC have scrapped plans to launch an Olympic channel, reports the SportsBusiness Journal.
Thedecision ends an almost four-year effort by the USOC to launch the network. The termination of the project was expected as the USOC tries to improve its standing with the IOC.
"The USOC and Comcast have decided it’s currently not the right time to create an Olympic channel," USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky told SportsBusiness Journal.
Comcast and the USOC put plans for the network on hold last August after concerns by the IOC. The USOC angered the IOC when it announced plans for the network last July. The deal needed IOC approval, which the USOC did not receive.
President Jacques Rogge told Around the Rings in August that the IOC had "concerns because of the use of the rings, because of the name, and the impact on the value of the rights in the market for the rightholders."
The pending merger of Comcast and NBC effectively doomed plans for a USOC channel. NBC Universal Sports currently operates a channel dedicated to coverage of Olympic sports. Universal Sports reaches 67 million homes in the U.S. It broadcasts world championships of many sports federations including for the IAAF, FINA, UCI and FIS.
