(ATR) The head of the Tokyo Olympics calls for new laws protecting all citizens against discrimination.
Hashimoto Seiko spoke Tuesday at Tokyo Pride House, a gathering place for the LGBTQ community that opened last year in the Shinjuku neighborhood.
"We need to take action now," Hashimoto said at the reception marking Pride Week in Tokyo.
Hashimoto, who was named president of Tokyo 2020 earlier this year after sexist comments from her predecessor, says the Olympics should be a "turning point in achieving diversity and harmony, including understanding for LGBTQ issues," she said,
Recognition of marriage between gay couples is one of the big LGBTQ issues in the Diet. The parliament is being urged to pass legislative changes ahead of the Olympics.
The Pride House was intended to be in operation last year in time for the Olympics and Paralympics. But while the Games were delayed until this year, the Pride House opened its doors last October.
The first Pride House was opened for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and followed with one in London for the 2012 Games. Rio hosted one in 2016, PyeongChang in 2018.
