Yamamoto was introduced to the International Olympic Committee on the first day of its current Coordination Commission visit to Japan’s capital. Yamamoto began work as the vice director general for Tokyo 2020 on Dec. 1.

The Tokyo politician was replaced as vice governor by Toshifumi Kawasumi in October after overseeing preparations for the 2020 Games for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

With the appointment on Nov. 29, Yamamoto becomes the fifth vice director general for the Organizing Committee and 11th sports official assisting Tokyo 2020 Chief Executive Officer Toshiro Muto. The other four vice director generals are Masaaki Komiya, Yukihiko Nunomura, Yusuke Sakaue and Hiroshi Sato.

Yamamoto now begins his second official role with the Tokyo 2020 team, previously serving as vice president in 2016.

The IOC continues its three-day inspection of the Japanese capital that concludes Dec. 13. The IOC and Tokyo 2020 tasted the recovery efforts of Fukushima and surrounding regions at the delegate dinner tonight where delicacies from the area will be showcased.
