Three Years To PyeongChang -- Monday Memo

(ATR) PyeongChang 2018 is marking three years to the Winter Olympics on Feb. 9 with a three-hour celebration.

(ATR) PyeongChang 2018 is marking three years to the Winter Olympics on Feb. 9 with a three-hour celebration.

Organizers tell the Korea Heraldthat 500 officials from PyeongChang 2018 and the Korean Olympic Committee are expected to attend the commemorative celebration.

Before the start of the ceremony, which is taking place in PyeongChang, organizers will allow attendees to try out their skills in two Olympic events--bobsleigh and cross-country skiing.

Sixty participants will run in a three-kilometer torch relay during the event. A mock opening ceremony will take place later on Monday, organizers added.

To conclude the celebration, attendees will bury a time capsule carrying well-wishes for the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Study on Paris 2024 Bid

(ATR) An NOC spokeswoman tellsATRthat Bernard Lapasset, head of the Comite Francais du Sport International, will present a feasibility study to Olympic stakeholders in Paris on Feb. 12.

This report will take into account the IOC’s 40-point Agenda 2020 reforms passed last December in Monaco. If the go-ahead is given on Feb. 12, a final decision on a Paris 2024 bid is scheduled for the summer.

On Jan. 7, the United States Olympic Committee chose Boston to bid for the 2024 Olympics.

Berlin and Hamburg turned in their respective bid proposals for the 2024 Games in September of last year. Other bids are expected to join the race, though only Rome has declared its interest.

Almaty 2022

A commission is visiting Almaty, Kazakhstan Feb. 14-18 to evaluate the city’s progress on its bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Around the Rings European editor Mark Bisson will be in Almaty to cover the evaluation commission’s visit.

One of two cities--either Almaty or Beijing--will be chosen to host the 2022 Olympics at the IOC Session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31.

Alpine World Ski Championships

The 2015 Alpine World Ski Championships are underway Vail/Beaver Creek, Colorado.

The International Ski Federation says that, all in all, nearly 600 athletes representing 68 nations have entered to participate in the 2015 World Championships.

In total, there will be 11 medal events, with 10 taking place in Beaver Creek and the nations team event being staged in Vail.

ATR European correspondent Brian Pinelli is in Vail/Beaver Creek this week to cover the event, which ends Feb. 15.

World Wheelchair Curling Championship

Lohja, Finland is hosting the 2015 World Wheelchair Curling Championship Feb. 7-14.

In 2013, Sochi staged the event and Canada's team took home the gold medal.
