DUBAI – The Executive Committee of the International Boxing Association has voted unanimously to provisionally suspend its President Ching-Kuo Wu, pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings for several serious disciplinary charges including financial mismanagement. The decision was taken by a vote of 14-0 at the EC meeting held yesterday in Dubai.
The Disciplinary Commission Chairman first suspended Ching-Kuo Wu on October 9 as he abused his powers in trying to dismiss 6 members of the Executive Committee and 3 members of the EC Bureau.
"We would have been in a truly disastrous situation if the Chairman of AIBA Disciplinary Commission had not acted to save the sport we love," said Franco Falcinelli, the recently named Interim President. "We have never faced a situation like this in the entire history of boxing. We are fortunate that the decision of the Disciplinary Commission Chairman saved our organization by immediately suspending the powers of Mr Wu, who was continuing to dismiss the members of EC and EC Bureau even though he has absolutely no power to do so."
As a result of new additional revelations of wrongdoings by Mr Wu, the EC voted unanimously to confirm and reinforce Wu’s suspension by the Disciplinary Commission and to lodge fresh charges of abuse of power and financial mismanagement for the Disciplinary Commission to review.
"Some of the findings were absolutely shocking. We would have never imagined his attempts to transform our organization into his own personal business, disregarding the AIBA Statutes. We have the determination and unity among all members of the EC to protect our National Federation members from getting damaged by the President’s wrongdoings and financial mismanagement in the past" said Pat Fiacco, a member of the EC from Canada.
Meanwhile, plans are going ahead for the convening of an Extraordinary Congress to be held in January 2018 in Dubai, where a no-confidence motion will be submitted to a vote of all attending National Federations , despite efforts by Mr Wu to prevent this from happening.
The latest move from world boxing’s Executive Committee appears to have the backing of a clear majority of the National Federations. More than 80 National Federations , including the United States, Russia, Canada, Brazil and Cuba , have already written to say they support convening the Extraordinary Congress and the no-confidence vote of Wu, in order to restore confidence in the troubled organization.
