(ATR) A new deal between social media company Snap and Eurosport could help the Olympic Games reach a younger audience.
The partnership means the Snapchat platform will present several types of curated content from the PyeongChang Winter Games, including some submitted by users.
Discovery Communications, which owns Eurosport, says the agreement will mark the first time that Snap has committed to a European, multi-language deal for covering the Olympics. Discovery says it will produce "unique opportunities for more brands to engage a younger generation of fans".
"We are thrilled to bring the excitement and passion of the Olympic Games directly to Snap’s dynamic and engaged younger audience, allowing Discovery to deliver on its promise to bring the Games to more people across more screens in Europe than ever before" Michael Lang, President of International Development & Digital for Discovery International, said in a statement.
On average, 57 million people use Snapchat daily in Europe. In the UK, 25 percent of people with smartphones now use Snapchat every day.
Under Armour Signs Syrian Refugee Olympian
Syrian swimmer Yusra Mardini is joining Under Armour’s team of international athletes.
The 19-year-old Mardini was one of 10 members of the Refugee Team that competed at the the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro after fleeing her home country of Syria in August 2015.
Since April, Mardini has been the youngest Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Mardini has said that she not only swims for herself but also for the millions of people globally that have been driven from their homes by war and persecution.
"We are inspired by her drive and accomplishments, both as a person and as an athlete. The way in which she is dealing with life's challenges, both past and present, shows a tremendous amount of character," said Chris Bate, Under Armour’s European Managing Director.
Mardini wants to compete in Tokyo in 2020 and Under Armour says the partnership will give her "a positive drive in her preparation".
Australian Olympic Team Formal Uniforms Unveiled
The official formal uniforms to be worn by the Australian Olympic Team at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics were unveiled on Friday by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC).
"These uniforms have a true Australian look about them," said Australian Olympic Committee CEO Matt Carroll in a statement. "We are particularly excited to welcome the Total Image Group on board as an official supplier and thank them for their support of the 2018 Olympic Team."
The uniforms, which include blazers with the names of every Australian Winter Olympian on the inside lining, feature a modern color palette with Navy and darker tones complimenting traditional green and gold to represent an overall winter feel.
Ian Chesterman, who will lead his sixth team as chef de mission at a Winter Games, highlighted the importance of the athletes’ input during the design phase.
"I think it is crucial to have the athletes involved in the process of creating these formal uniforms. Their tick of approval really means everything. They are the ones that have spent years training to earn that blazer," Chesterman said.
Australia will be sending a team of approximately 50 athletes to compete across 11 sports at the 2018 PyeongChang Games.
