(ATR) C.K. Wu tells Around the Rings he will run for IOC president.
"I can confirm the date for the announcement will be Thursday May 23 in Taipei," Wu said by telephone from his office at AIBA headquarters in Lausanne.
The international boxing federation president circulated a letter yesterday from the AIBA executive committee urging him to run for the IOC presidency.
Today, Wu made it clear that he has decided to enter the fray to succeed Jacques Rogge, who steps down Sept. 10 after 12 years in office.
The field of candidates so far includes German IOC vice president Thomas Bach, who declared last week, and IOC vice president Ser Miang Ng, who announces Thursday. Puerto Rico’s Richard Carrion is expected to declare soon. Swiss IOC member Denis Oswald says he is considering a run, and Sergey Bubka of Ukraine is another possibility.
Wu says he will wait until he declares next week to reveal a manifesto. He says his experience as an IOC member since 1988 as well as his federation leadership are among the strengths he offers his colleagues.
Ng Announces at Sorbonne
IOC vice president Ser Miang Ng will announce his candidacy for the presidency Thursday at the historic Salle des Actes at the Sorbonne in Paris.
Ng had previously said he would declare Thursday in Paris but had left the venue open.
The choice of the Sorbonne is symbolic; the first session of the IOC was held there June 23, 1894.
