(ATR) The Romanian city of Brasov is trying again to host the Winter Youth Olympic Games.
The Romanian Olympic and Sport Committee (COSR) announced the decision to bid for the 2024 edition after talks between the COSR and government officials in Brasov this week.
Deputy Prime Minister Vasile-Daniel Suciu, Tourism Minister Bogdan Trif, Minister of Youth and Sports Bogdan Matei and Minister of Finance Eugen Teodorovici support the project and said they would recommend that Prime Minister Viorica Dancila sign a cover letter for the organization of the 2024 Youth Olympic Games.
Brasov Mayor George Scripcaru, County Council President Adrian Vestea, Rasnov Mayor Liviu Butnariu and Predeal Mayor Lucian Adam are already on board, having signed the letter of intent addressed to the IOC President Thomas Bach.
"Romania’s enrollment in the race for the organization of an Olympic competition is a national pride," said COSR President Mihai Covaliu in a statement.
Brasov hosted the 2013 European Youth Olympic Festival but lost out to Lausanne to host the 2020 Winter YOG by a 71-10 vote at the IOC Session in 2015.
Sofia, Bulgaria is the only other city to show outright interest in a 2024 Winter YOG bid. The Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov asked the country’s sports ministry to prepare a bid after meeting with Bach in September of last year.
Russia and Spain are two other countries reported to be mulling a bid.
An IOC spokesperson told Around the Rings earlier this year that the "2024 YOG host selection process has not yet been established".
"[The process] will not be launched until after Lausanne 2020," the spokesperson added. "In general, a YOG edition is elected three years in advance so around 2021 for the YOG 2024."
