Rio Mayor Admits Cleanup Deficit

Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Paes believes the city will not hit its target for treatment of sewage flowing into Guanabara Bay.

Rio’s plan for the 2016 Olympics called for the eventual treatment of 80 percent of sewage that flows into the bay, the sailing venue for the Games.

Earlier this year, state of Rio de Janeiro officials said they did not believe the 80 percent goal would be met, but that belief vanishedwhen the IOC Coordination Commission and Executive Board met in Rio de Janeiro in late February.

"It is indeed a wasted opportunity," Paes said to SporTV on Mar. 24.

"[It] is something that we should have been able to achieve. As a Rio resident, I think it's a shame."

Australia Begins 2016 Preparations

Australia has named its 2016 chef de mission.

Kitty Chiller, a competitor in Modern Pentathlon at the 2000 Games in Sydney, will lead the Australian delegation to Rio de Janeiro.

Chiller was announced at a press conference hosted by the Australian Olympic Committee. At the press conference, Slater & Gordon was named the official law firm of the AOC and the women’s rugby sevens team received $78,722 in funding from Adidas for recent performances.

The AOC said in a release they expect a team of 470 athletes to compete in 40 disciplines at Rio 2016.
