(ATR) Budapest, Los Angeles and Paris hope to score points with their first international appeals on day one of the general assembly of the 205-member Association of National Olympic Committees in Doha, Qatar.
The three cities will each have 20 minutes to make their case to host the Olympics. Olympic champions will be part of every team – along with the mayors of Los Angeles and Paris and the deputy mayor of Budapest.
The ANOC assembly is one of the few events where the cities will present ahead of the IOC vote next September in Lima, Peru. IOC rules of engagement have limited the international campaigns of Olympic bidders as a way to cut costs for the cities.
It’s the only chance for the bids to present to ANOC. By the time of the 2017 General Assembly, the 2024 host will have been chosen by the IOC.
Day two of the ANOC assembly will include reports from the nine commissions and working groups formed three years ago to increase the level of services to the NOC members.
"It is very important that we continue to ensure that our Commissions and Working Groups deliver initiatives that have a real impact on the quality of the support ANOC provides its NOCs," says ANOC President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah.
The ANOC commissions include: Athletes, International Relations, Marketing and New Sources of Finance, Medical, Modernization Follow up, Youth and the ANOC Events Working Group/ ANOC World Beach Games San Diego 2019.
"It is not just a matter of saying the right things but also taking action and I believe the NOCs will be happy with the progress that has been made when they hear the reports in the General Assembly," says Sheikh Ahmad.
On Monday in Doha the 27-member ANOC Council reviewed the reports ahead of the General Assembly. The council also heard an update on the work being conducted along with the IOC and the Summer and Winter Olympic sports associations to increase cooperation between national authorities and national sports organizations. ANOC is also examining how to develop cooperation opportunities with UNESCO as part of this effort.
The agenda on day two of the meetings includes reports from seven Olympic organizing committees, from just-ended Rio de Janeiro to the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
The ANOC assembly in the Qatari capital is the first in the Middle East and is expected to be the biggest, with 1200 participants.
