(ATR) The PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Torch Relay resumes on Thursday as it nears the host city of February’s Winter Games.
After a day off on Jan. 24, the torch relay travels to Inje, South Korea on Jan. 25 to begin the final leg of the journey to PyeongChang. The relay will only take one more day off on Feb. 1 as it winds through Gangwon Province towards PyeongChang for the Opening Ceremony Feb. 9.
The torch relay arrived in Gangwon Province on Jan. 21, the home province of the Olympic and Paralympic venues in PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon.
Prior to its arrival in Gangwon, the torch visited the Tae Sung Freedom Village on the South Korea side of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea. The visit occurred on Jan. 19, one day prior to the landmark Olympic summit between North and South Korean Olympic officials brokered by the International Olympic Committee at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne.
Cherwon was the first stop in Gangwon Province on Jan. 21 after the inter-Korea talks in Lausanne on Jan. 20 where IOC President Thomas Bach announced 22 North Korean athletes would participation in the Olympics in South Korea.
The torch relay will spend the next 16 days winding through the province, visiting 18 cities and counties along the journey.
The Olympic Torch Relay was kicked off in the Olympic birthplace of Greece before arriving in South Korea on Nov. 1 for the 101-day relay through the Olympic host country. There have been 7,500 torch bearers who have traversed the 2,018 kilometer trip throughout South Korea.
The torch relay will conclude with the lighting of the Olympic Flame during the Opening Ceremony on Feb. 9. The lighting of the flame signifies the start of the Winter Olympics which will conclude on Feb. 25.
