(ATR) AIBA president C.K. Wu tells Around the Rings adding pro boxers to the Olympic boxing tournament would be "good for everyone".
"All the national federations are quite excited and willing to support and accept the changes," Wu tells ATR on the scene of the Women's World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. "This is good for everyone."
The decision to include professional boxers will be debated at the upcoming AIBA general assembly next week in Lausanne. Wu says he believes the National Federations are on board with the new initiative because it allows them to choose which boxers will compete at the Games.
"I think if it will pass then I think now National Federations will plan because the power is in their hands."
The ninth edition of the women's world championships will conclude today at the Barys Arena in Astana with 285 boxers from 64 countries competing throughout the eight-day tournament. ATR's Ed Hula III is in Astana for the event that determines 12 of the boxers who will be competing at the Rio 2016 Games this August.
