Pound Named New OBS Chair; Gold Coast Celebrates Commonwealth Games

Dick Pound Chairing OBS Board

Longtime IOC member Richard Pound of Canada is the new chair of the Olympic Broadcasting Services board. He replaces Hein Verbruggen. The IOC announced Bach’s decision on Friday.

Pound, a former Marketing Commission chairman, is one of several old guard members of the Olympic Movement on the board.

Manolo Romero, who founded OBS and retired after the 2012 Olympics, remains as vice chair. François Carrard, former director general for the IOC, keeps his spot on the board. IOC director general Christophe de Kepper, IOC marketing chief Timo Lumme, and Gilbert Felli all retain their seats.

Under former IOC president Jacques Rogge, the board had six members. Bach, however, added three positions to the board: Lana Haddad, the IOC finance director, and Gerardo Werthein and Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., both IOC members.

IOC vice president Zaiqing Yu, executive board member Ugur Erdener, and IOC honorary member Kipchoge Keino will be appointed as members of the Olympic Museum Foundation Board.

Gold Coast Celebrates 2018 Commonwealth Games

Gold Coast residents celebrated ‘four years to go’ until the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on Friday.

Over 400 students from local schools joined athletes and GC2018 officials at Surfer’s Paradise Beach to form a giant ‘four’ representing four years until the 2018 Commonwealth Games begin.

In a statement, Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate said it was great to have the students involved in the celebrations as they will benefit most from the long term legacy that GC2018 will provide to the region.

"GC2018 will be the biggest sporting event ever held on the Gold Coast and the biggest sports event held in Australia this decade. Gold Coasters are embracing this unique opportunity with passion and commitment." Mayor Tate said.

The 21st Commonwealth Games will take place April 4-15, 2018.

World Curling Federation Announces Host Cities

The World Curling Federation has announced the host cities for events in the 2014-2015 curling season.

On September 13th, 2014, Denmark’s Taarnby Curling Club will host the European Mixed Curling Championship.This is an open invitation event for curling teams consisting of two male and two female athletes.

The World Wheelchair Curling Qualification Event will be held in Lillehammer from November 1st to November 6th, 2014.The top two teams in this event qualify for the World Wheelchair Curling Championship, to take place February 2015 in Lohja, Finland.

The European Junior Curling Challenge will take place from January 3rd to January 8th, 2015, in Prague, Czech Republic. This is the sixth European Junior Curling Challenge the country has hosted.

Finally, Tallin, Estonia will welcome the best junior men’s and women’s teams for the World Junior Curling Championships. The competition is set to take place from February 28th to March 8th, 2015.

In a statement released Friday, World Curling Federation president Kate Caithness said that the WCF "[is] in no doubt that that each of the local organising committees will put on a great show and we look forward to welcoming everyone to these venues next season."
