(ATR) Four city councilors in Toronto are casting a shadow over the city's potential 2024 Olympic bid.
Following a successful 2015 Pan Am Games, Toronto budget chief Gary Crawford said he was confident the city could bid for the Games and win.
CBC News reports that on Monday however, the councilor said he is now "cautiously holding back" his opinions on a potential go at the Olympics.
City councilors gathered on Monday for budget committee meeting and weighed in on the possibility of Toronto hosting the Games. The city must submit a letter of intent to the IOC by September 15 to enter the bid race.
The CBC says thataccording to a city feasibility report published last year, a bid could cost Toronto anywhere between $50-60 million.
City councilor John Campbell said that the bid would be an "albatross" for the city. Campbell's colleague,Kristyn Wong-Tam sent a letter to Toronto Mayor John Tory requesting that he hold off sending a letter to the IOC until "due diligence has been completed."
Another councilor,James Pasternak, said he is unsure whether Toronto would be able to compete with Los Angeles if the southern Californian city moves forward with its bid.
The L.A. City Council began discussions and hearings regarding the city's 218-page bid book last week. After two days of hearings, the council remained undecided on moving forward with the proposal.
A vote on the L.A. 2024 bid will likely happen on Tuesday, September 1.
Bid leader Casey Wasserman will be present on behalf of L.A. 2024.The council will also take into account presentations from the L.A. '84 Foundation regarding the legacy the 1984 Olympics left on the city and the effects it had on the local economy.
L.A.2024 predicts a surplus over $150 million. The total projected revenues are $4.67 billion while the bid estimates costs at just $4.52 billion for the organizing committee.
Budapest, Hamburg, Paris, and Rome have all thrown their hats into the 2024 Olympic bid race. The IOC votes on the 2024 host city at the Session in Lima, Peru in September 2017.
