(ATR) A full week of meetings is underway in Apia, Samoa, culminating in the ONOC and Pacific Games Council General Assemblies on June 16-17.
Scheduled workshops for National Olympic Committee delegates and International Federations will range from abuse and harassment prevention to climate action. One workshop focuses on how to prepare a successful regional games, using the Solomon Islands NOC as a case study. The archipelago will host the Pacific Games in 2023.
The IOC will have meetings later in the week covering the NOC’s roles and responsibilities for hosting regional games.
Samoa was awarded the 2019 Pacific Games last December after Tonga rescinded its hosting responsibility the previous May. Given the rushed preparations, organizers for the Games will likely rely on existing infrastructure from the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2015.
The Pacific Games Council and Tonga’s Olympic Committee filed a civil suit against the Tongan government last year for an alleged breach of contract following the country’s withdrawal.
Other events for the week include the NOC meeting with Olympic Solidarity, an ONOC Athletes’ Commission meeting and workshop, the OSFO General Assembly, and a Tokyo 2020 ticketing and sponsorship meeting.
Both the ONOC General Assembly and the Pacific Games General Assembly will be one day affairs on June 16 and 17 respectively. Following the two meetings, the Samoa 2019 chefs de mission will be given a venue tour to assess preparations.
The Opening Ceremony for the 2019 Pacific Games is on July 8 in Apia.
