On Thursday, LA 2024 and the LA84 Foundation will lead the American observance of Olympic Day by co-hosting 500 young Angelenos at the LA Memorial Coliseum for a day of sport clinics led by coaches and Olympic athletes including badminton gold medalist Tony Gunawan.
The day will start with an Opening Ceremony and lighting of the Coliseum’s Olympic Cauldron, with remarks by LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, Vice Chair and 4 time Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans and LA84 Foundation President and CEO Renata Simril. Then the 500 youth will participate in clinics in the Olympic sports of archery, badminton, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, rugby, soccer, and volleyball, and Paralympic sitting volleyball.
The event is cosponsored by the Foundation for Global Sports Development and Nike.
LA 2024’s event will be the US flagship event, with the United States Olympic Committee projecting that Olympic Day 2016 will see a record-setting 2,120 scheduled events in 1,503 communities, engaging nearly 900,000 Americans in celebration of the Olympic Movement.
Olympic Day, celebrated globally on June 23, has been recognized each year since 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games on June 23, 1894. An International Olympic Committee initiative, the mission of Olympic Day is to promote fitness, well-being, culture and education, while promoting the Olympic Values – excellence, friendship and respect – and the three Olympic Day pillars – move, learn and discover – in every corner of the globe. In 2016, Olympic Day activities are being held on six continents with several thousand events worldwide and more than 160 participating National Olympic Committees.
