Olympic Day has already started in Sweden. During two days in Stockholm children from local schools have tried Olympic sports. The program started in 2011 and have reached more than 131,000 kids so far.
About 600 children, aged 10 to 12, were on site in the Stockholm suburb of Spånga – just a few kilometers away from the proposed site of the Olympic Village if Sweden will get the Winter Olympic Games in 2026. Four former athletes showed the children a variety of winter sports.
Ice hockey player Danijela Rundqvist took a medal in both Salt Lake City 2002 and Turin 2006, and she displayed some crafty stickhandling on the ice. Figure skater Joshi Helgesson got gobsmacked children to look in awe when she spun some amazing pirouettes. Speed skater Johan Röljer, two-time Olympian, also showcased his speed skills on the blades. The goal with Olympic Day in Sweden is for every child to find a sport, and will also be conducted in Gothenburg, Malmö and Stockholm (summer sports) during 2018. A total of ten days during the whole year. The Swedish Olympic Committee has conducted more then 220 Olympic Days since 2011, attracting more than 131,000 children.
