(ATR) The Washington Post'sMatt Bonesteel takes a closer look at the three cities on the list of finalists to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games: Oslo, Norway; Almaty, Kazakhstan; and Beijing, China."The three remaining cities have issues of their own," Bonesteel writes. "Thestaggering cost of this year’s Winter Games in Sochi, Russia seems to have had a chilling effect on potential bidsfor future Games."

Boston Globe columnistDan Shaughnessy calls Boston's potential bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics Games "preposterous." Shaughnessy writes that the city of Boston needsbridge repair, better public schools, and programs for the disenfranchised, notan event that would "strangle [the city] financially and logistically for decades."

The Associated Press saysSalt Lake City is positioning itself to make a bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics,citing "well-maintained facilities from its 2002 Games that it hopes will attract the attention of Olympic organizers."

Salt Lake Tribune reporterChristopher Kamrani explores whether Salt Lake is ready to host another Olympic Games. Kamrani says that in the years since the 2002 Winter Olympics, the "lasting memories" of the Games "have not dissipated."

FIFA World Cup

The Atlantic'sKabir Chibber writes that"by a lot of measures, it's been an unusually exciting, convention-defying" World Cup in Brazil.The "sheer verve and entertainment" of this year’s World Cup has "wowed even the most cynical," Chibber adds.

Sports Illustrated reporter James Young discusses howNeymar's cultural significance to Brazil "transcends both soccer and the World Cup." Caveats aside, Young saysNeymar represents Brazil in a way that "no current member of the Brazilian soccer team--and not that many from the past either--represent Brazil."

Global News online new producerPeter Meiszner has a new report from the Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) thatsays it has "broken even" financially.

VANOC chief executive director John Furlong tells Global News, "The true measure of the 2010 Winter Games is not strictly financial, but a positive financial outcome is something we are very proud of in the story of the Games’ success."

United States television network EPIXis bringing a documentary about gay athletes "to the small screen" that was partially shot during the Sochi Winter Olympic Games. Olympian Johnny Weir is featured in the documentary, titled To Russia With Love, as host-interviewer.

The documentary makes its world premiere on October 22.
