The South American Sports Organization (ODESUR) approved a historic modification of its

statutes to increase the representation of women in its Executive Committee, in a new

step within its commitment to promote gender equality in Olympism.

The measure was unanimously approved by the delegates of the 15 National Olympic

Committees represented at the XXXIII Ordinary General Assembly of ODESUR that was

carried out online over the weekend.

The reform in the statute establishes that at least 25 percent of the members of the

Executive Committee of the organism must be women. "ODESUR is committed to

promoting gender equality," said its president, Camilo Pérez López Moreira. "Just as our

South American Games seek to achieve the objective of having the same number of

male and female athletes compete, our organization is taking steps to guarantee a

greater female presence within its management team," added the leader.

The new members of the ODESUR Executive Committee will be elected in an assembly

during the III South American Youth Games Rosario 2022, which will take place between

April 28 and May 8 of next year in the Argentine city.

In a video presented during the ordinary assembly, the president of the International

Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, thanked ODESUR and the South American

Olympic Committees for having joined forces to organize sports competitions in the

region under strict sanitary standards in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This union of the Olympic Movement behind the same goal offers us all the necessary

confidence in the face of the postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (...) Our highest

priority has been, is and will continue to be to organize a safe Olympic Games for all

athletes and all the participants, as well as our gracious host, the Japanese people, "said

Bach.

Additionally, the organizing committees of the South American Masters Games Santiago

2021, the Rosario 2022 South American Youth Games, the 2022 South American Games

Asuncion 2022 and the 2023 South American Beach Games in Santa Marta also

presented in the assembly on their progress towards the realization of the events.
