(ATR) There's been no official announcement, but the IOC website has been updated and namesRobin Mitchell, IOC member in Fiji since 1994, interim chair of Olympic Solidarity.
He replaces at least on a temporary basis, Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah, the IOC member in Kuwait who stepped aside last week from his IOC duties.
Sheikh Ahmad is facing accusations, which he denies, of creating fraudulent evidence in Switzerland to combat a lawsuit. He says the legal issues he faces are the result of political intrigue involving the Kuwaiti royal family.
In a statement from his office in Kuwait on November 19, the Sheikh declared that he would temporarily abdicate his IOC positions as a result of the charges rather than be a distraction. He has been an IOC member since 1992 and head of Olympic Solidarity since 2012. That’s the same year he took over as president of the Association of National Olympic Committees,a post he has not resigned. And his status as president of the Olympic Council of Asia is also not covered by his IOC move.
Sheikh Ahmad is expected to preside this week over the annual assembly of ANOC taking place in Tokyo. Among the meetings on the sidelines is one for the Olympic Solidarity Commission, which Mitchell will now chair.
Mitchell, 72, is a physician by profession with a friendly, unassuming personality. He has become one of the most influential figures on the IOC in his 14 year tenure.
Mitchell is a former president of the Fiji NOC. He is president of the 17 member Oceania National Olympic Committees and is a vice president of ANOC.
As one of only two physicians currently on the IOC, he is a member of the Medical and Scientific Commission.
He is a member of the coordination commission for the Tokyo Games. He has a crucial voice in creating the IOC of the future as a member of the IOC Members Election Commission.
Mitchell is on the inside of decision-making at the IOC as a member of the Executive Board. Now he will take command of the fund that provides a significant portion of the income for the world’s NOCs.
