Busy Week for IOC
Thursday is decision day for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games.
Around the Rings will be on the scene in Lausanne as IOC members vote among Buenos Aires, Glasgow and Medellin for hosting rights to the YOG.
Also in Lausanne this week, the IOC hands out its Women and Sport Awards late Monday, the Executive Board meets Tuesday to nominate new IOC members, the three 2020 bid cities present for the penultimate time, and the six candidates for IOC president address their colleagues – a first for the Olympic Movement.
Kazan 2013 Universiade
Competition starts this week at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia.
Badminton, boxing, diving, football, synchronized swimming and water polo each get underway Friday ahead of Saturday’s opening ceremony.
A total of 10,442 university athletes from 162 countries will compete across 27 sports, most of which also feature on the Summer Olympics program.
Events run through July 17.
ATR will be on the scene beginning the week of Monday, July 8.
NHL Sochi Decision Expected
The long-running negotiations regarding NHL player participation in the Sochi 2014 Olympics could end on Monday.
A report on the NHL’s website following Thursday’s Board of Governors meeting said league commissioner Gary Bettman will meet with representatives of the IOC, National Hockey League Players’ Association and International Ice Hockey Federation in New York City on Monday. The report says the meeting would "conclude an agreement that would enable NHL players to play in the 2014 Winter Olympics".
FIFA U-20 World Cup
The round of 16 begins Tuesday in Turkey at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Quarterfinals will follow Saturday and Sunday with semis scheduled for July 10 and the final for July 13.
Tour de France, Wimbledon
Wimbledon wraps up this week in England while the Tour de France continues through July 21.
Office Closing
ATR headquarters in Atlanta will close Thursday for the U.S. holiday of July 4 but will resume regular business hours Friday. Needless to say, we will have all of the latest from Lausanne, where it is not a U.S. holiday!
