IOC, 2026 Bids Assess Impact of Sion Demise
It may not have been scheduled, but a half dozen potential bidders for the 2026 Olympics – as well as the IOC – should be huddling Monday to gauge the impact of the plebiscite defeat of the bid from Sion.
The IOC in particular must worry that the rejection of yet another Olympic bid by the stolid and sober Swiss could poison the well for the remaining six cities now consulting with the IOC on whether to bid.
One of those cities, Calgary is already expecting a referendum. Stockholm is not according to last word, nor is Sapporo. Uncertain for plebiscites are possible bids from Austria, Italy and Turkey.
If the IOC is blaming out of date information on costs of the Games for fueling the opposition, today might be the day to figure out how to avoid burning at the stake for the rest of the 2026 field.
World Cup 2026 Decision
Two bids - Morocco and United – are the choice awaiting delegates when they vote June 13 on a host for the 2026 World Cup. More than 200 voters, from every FIFA football association, will make the decision. The North American United bid is favored.

World Cup Play Begins
The FIFA tournament begins June 14 in Moscow, Russia vs Saudi Arabia. By this time next week 11 round one marches will have been played across Russia.
Oceania NOCs Arrive in Samoa
The annual assembly of the 17 member Oceania National Olympic Committees takes place this week in Apia, Samoa. Meetings throughout the week will lead up to the general assembly on June 16, led by ONOC President and IOC member Robin Mitchell.
