Tokyo 2020 Leaders Meet in Earthquake Region

The executive board of Tokyo 2020 takes a field trip July 30 to Fukushima, 300 km north of the Japanese capital.

The meeting is part of efforts to bring relief and support from the 2020 Olympics for the citizens of the Tohuku region devastated in the 2011 earthquake. It’s the first time the EB has met outside Tokyo.

The meeting is to be held at the National Training Center J-VILLAGE. The center, Japan’s first for football, was shut down after the earthquake, but is now ready to reopen.

Discussion between Tokyo 2020 and representatives of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures is the major agenda item.

A press conference closes the day.

Tokyo 2020 has already decided that baseball and softball matches in 2020 will be held in the earthquake region. The Olympic torch relay will also spend extra time in the area.

The EB visit will also include a photo opportunity at a fish market.

Participants at the EB meeting include Masayoshi Yoshino, Minister for Reconstruction, Masao Uchibori, governor of Fukushima Prefecture, Shigeki Chiba, vice governor of Iwate Prefecture, Yoshiaki Sano, vice governor of Miyagi Prefecture, Yoshiro Mori, President, Tokyo 2020, and Toshiro Muto, CEO, Tokyo 2020.

Italy Chooses Olympic Cities

The Italian NOC CONI could select the cities it will nominate for a 2026 Olympic bid on August 1.

Milan, Turin and Cortina d’Ampezzo are among the choices -- or possibly a combination from among them.

An evaluation board is studying the feasibility of the three cities and could be ready to report this week. If not, the decision will come in September.

CONI is believed to be seeking a wayto include more than one city.

The evaluation board, chaired by CONI secretary general Carlo Mornati, includes IOC members Franco Carraro, Mario Pescante and Ivo Ferriani, and IOC honorary members Manuela Di Centa and Ottavio Cinquanta.

Sailing in Aarhus

The 2018 Hempel Sailing World Championships begin July 30 and run until Aug. 12 in Denmark.

Held every four years, the event is the biggest for World Sailing. More than 1500 sailors from 100 nations will compete. More than 400,000 spectators expected to attend.

The championships are the latest high profile sports event for Aarhus. In 2017 the SportAccord convention was held in the city of 300,000 on the east coast of Jutland.
