Arab Games Opening

Around the Rings will be on the scene in Qatar for Friday’s opening ceremony of the 12th Arab Games.

More than 6,000 athletes and officials from 22 countries are expected to descend upon Doha for competition in 31 sports and two Paralympic disciplines spread across 14 venues. Events run through Dec. 23.

Noticeably absent will be a team from Syria, who is sitting out the Games in protest of its suspension from the Arab League.

South African Sports Summit

Danny Jordaan, CEO of the South African World Cup, tops the speaker lineup at the Beyond Sport Summit running Monday through Thursday in Capetown.

Themed around utilizing the power of sport for social good, the conference will also feature former British prime minister Tony Blair, four-time Olympic champion sprinter Michael Johnson, "Blade Runner" Oscar Pistorius and Wilfried Lemke, the United Nations Secretary -General's Special Adviser on Sport for Peace and Development.

Meetings of ANOC Council, IOC EB

The decision-making bodies of both the Association of National Olympic Committees and the IOC will meet in Lausanne this week.

A meeting of the ANOC Council is scheduled for Tuesday with the IOC EB to follow Wednesday and Thursday.

The ANOC Council is expected to consider how to select a representative from ANOC to sit on the EB.

The Executive Board could receive the findings of Ethics Commission inquiries and will discuss the alleged embezzlement at the Olympic Museum.

ATR will be on the scene for the duration.

World Mind Games

SportAccord’s inaugural World Mind Games kickoff Tuesday in Beijing with around 170 elite players competing in chess, bridge, draughts, go and the Chinese chess variant xiang qi.

Olympic Venue Legacies

The London Assembly’s Economy, Culture and Sport Committee will publish Thursday its report on the legacy plans for the Aquatics Center, Handball Arena, Velopark, Hockey Center and Eton Manor, the 2012 venue for wheelchair tennis.

London 2012 Test Events

ExCeL will be put to the test for a third straight weekend with international invitational events in wrestling and weightlifting.

The exhibition center in East London is also the 2012 venue for table tennis, boxing and fencing – all of which staged dress rehearsalslate last month – as well as taekwondo and judo – both of which were tested over the weekend.

Paralympic Honors

Four members of the Paralympic Movement will be decorated Saturday at an awards gala in Beijing with the Paralympic Order, the IPC’s highest honor.

The recipients are Matthias Berg, seven-time Paralympian and member of the German National Paralympic Committee; Luca Pancalli, president of NPC Italy; Nabil Salem, former president of NPC Egypt and the African Paralympic Committee; and the late Randy Snow, four-time Paralympian and member of the International Tennis Federation.
