(ATR) IOC member Luis Mejia Oviedo is elected the new president of the Central American and Caribbean Sports Organization.
Mejia defeated incumbent Steve Stoute of Barbados, who had been serving since 2017.
The election took place in Panama Thursday where the executive committee of the regional sports organization was meeting.
CACSO includes 31 countries in the Caribbean and Central American region.
In addition to the presidency, the entire executive committee was elected for a four year term. Notable is the election of two women for vice presidents for the first time. Mexico’s Jimena Saldaña, former secretary general for PASO, is first vice president. Puerto Rico NOC President Sara Rosales is third vice president.
Mejía is the third IOC member to hold the presidency. Mejia is also the second Dominican president following Dr. José Joaquín Puello. He served as president from 1986 to 2003.
Mejia, 66, has been on the IOC since 2017. He has been president of the Dominican Republic NOC since 2003.
