Rogge Returns to Vidy
IOC President Jacques Rogge is expected back at IOC headquarters Oct. 8. He’s been away for a month, recuperating from hip surgery at home in Belgium. It’s his longest absence from the IOC since becoming president 11 years ago. Rogge, 70, is beginning the last year of his presidency.
Felli Receives Legion of Honor
IOC veteran Gilbert Felli receives the Legion of Honor in an Oct. 6 ceremony in Leysin, his home village in the Swiss Alps.
Felli is being recognized for his work across 20+ years as IOC sports director and now Olympic Games Executive Director. Felli is due to retire from his post in 2014.
IOC member Jean Claude Killy, himself a member of the Legion, will confer the beribboned medal upon Felli.
FIVB President Arrives in Lausanne
Newly elected volleyball federation president Ary Graça is leading a jam-packed first week at the headquarters of FIVB.
Graça tells Around the Rings he’s been surprised at what he’s finding as he takes over as the first elected president of the FIVB in 30 years.
He paused at the FIVB offices to speak briefly to ATR, promising more details next week on his plans for the federation. He was scheduled to fly from Switzerland on Thursday to arrive in time to vote Friday in Rio de Janeiro for the reelection of Carlos Nuzman as president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee. Graça says he’ll return to Lausanne next week.
He says he will be surrendering his presidencies of the Brazilian federation and the South American federation.
Also taking on a new role is Cristobal Marte Hoffiz as first executive vice president. From the Dominican Republic, he is the president of NORCECA, the confederation for the sport in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
