(ATR) The boxing tournament for the Pan American Games in Lima next month will be the first observation point of the new IOC Task Force.
The Pan American Conference will be in charge of the boxing tournament in Lima, having assumed control after the International Boxing Association (AIBA) fell into disgrace.
"As a member of the IOC of Latin America I have been invited by Panam Sports to the Games, and I will take advantage to be in the boxing tournament," Willi Kaltschmitt tellsAround the Rings after the end of the 134th Session of the IOC in Lausanne.
During the Olympic assembly the Guatemalan Kaltschmitt was confirmed as a member of this new IOC group that will supplant AIBA in guaranteeing the qualifying process for the next Olympic Games and in supervising the organization of the Tokyo 2020 boxing tournament.
Joining Kaltschmitt on the task force are the IOC member in Uganda William Blick, the Egyptian Mahmoud Medancy of the Athletes Commission, and the Austrian Marius Vizer, president of the International Judo Federation. Morinari Watanabe, president of the International Gymnastics Federation and IOC member in Japan, is the chair.
The IOC Session in Lausanne also had other repercussions for Kaltschmitt, who revealed to ATR that he had submitted his resignation from the IOC Executive Committee six months ago to allow his position to be one of the two vacancies to be filled by the IOC. Prince Faisal bin Hussein of Jordan and the Moroccan Nawal El Moutawakel were both elected, with the latter replacing Kaltschmitt beginning in January. Prince Faisal will immediately take over from Gunilla Lindberg, whose eight-year term ended.
Kaltschmitt's eight-year term on the Executive Board does not end until 2020 but he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 80 on August 13, meaning he will have to step down at the end of the year.
