During his visit to PyeongChang in September 2016, IOC President Thomas Bach declared the Age of Asia in Sports, highlighting the unprecedented opportunity afforded by the three consecutive editions of Olympic Games to be hosted in the region.
Ever since, PyeongChang 2018 has taken the lead in collaboration among the PyeongChang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 Organizing Committees and had several meetings, discussing potential areas for collaboration under the assistance and guidance of the IOC.
Through these meetings, the three OCOGs defined to the following objectives for collaboration; the successful staging of the three consecutive Olympic Games, the promotion of the Olympic Movement and the values of
Olympism, the enhancement of flexibility and sustainability as encouraged in the Olympic Agenda 2020, and the creation of lasting legacies in the Games.
At today’s meeting, the Executive-Directors of the three OCOGs agreed to cooperate in the following areas under the two themes; the efficient preparations of the respective Olympic Games and the promotion of the Olympic Movement.
The first one includes transfer of Games knowledge and staff exchange among the three OCOGs. In the latter one, the three OCOGs will explore the possibilities to work together in various projects, including joint promotional activities at PyeongChang2018 Games for 3 OCOGs, promoting the values of Olympism and peace, and staging various joint cultural events.
With these collaboration projects, it is expected that the three Asian OCOGs will leave behind lasting legacies not only for sports in East Asia but also for the entire Olympic Movement as a whole.
