IOC Member Blasts IOA
Indian IOC member Randhir Singh has issued a devastating salvo against the new leadership of the Indian Olympic Association.
Speaking to Press Trust of India, Singh said the decision to schedule an upcoming executive board meeting questions whether they care for sport in India.
The IOC suspended the IOA in December, saying it would not recognize any leadership not elected under IOC guidelines.
"They are taking their defiance of IOC to another level. They seem to be hell-bent upon ruining Indian Olympic sports in the country," Randhir said of the decision to hold the meeting.
"I don't think they care at all for the Olympic Movement. They are only keen to hold their position and eventually it's the athletes who will pay for their folly. Let them face the music from the IOC."
Singh is the former IOA secretary general.
Media reports say the meeting agenda will include a discussion of the Sports Code, which triggered the IOC suspension, and the suspension itself.
Zambia Asks for Center Upgrade
The president of the Olympic Committee of Zambia is petitioning the IOC for an upgrade to the Olympic Youth Development Center in Lusaka, Zambia.
Miriam Moyo told local media she is waiting for a response from the IOC about turning the facility into a "center of excellence".
"It has actually delayed because by entering 2013, we have also gone into the next quadrennial and I’m sure something will come up soon," she said.
The center opened in 2010.
Somalia NOC Elects New Leaders
Abdullahi Tarabi is the new president of the Somalia National Olympic Committee.
Tarabi was elected at the SNOC General Assembly on Jan. 3 and will serve a four-year term.
Tarabi replaces Aden Yabarow Wiish, who was killed in a terror attack on April 4, 2012. Tarabi most recently served as SNOC secretary general.
Duran Farah, SNOC vice president and the head of international relations, was elected secretary general.
"The new leaders are expected to revive the country's sports activities, contribute to the rebuilding of a better society through sports and encourage Somali government and international supporters to rebuild the countries sporting facilities to allow Somali athletes for better preparation," the SNOC said in a statement to Around the Rings.
The minister and deputy minster of the Social Affairs Ministry, which oversees sports in Somalia, were both present for the General Assembly.
New Mexican Olympic Committee President
Carlos Padilla is the new president of the Mexico Olympic Committee.
He was elected unanimously at a recent meeting of the committee, replacing Felipe Munoz, president since 2008.
Bahrain, Iraq NOCs Meet
The leaders of the Bahrain and Iraqi NOCs met on the sidelines of the Gulf Coast football tournament this weekend.
According to a statement, the BOC CEO Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa met Raad Hamoudi, praising him for his "tremendous efforts" in the Olympic Movement.
Both NOCs discussed ways to increase cooperation and coordination on sport-related issues.
