(ATR) Sports hoping to join the Olympic program will find the pathway leads through the World Games and ARISF, the Association of IOC Recognized International Sport Federations.
Jose Perurena leads the International World Games Association and Raffaele Chiulli heads ARISF.
The two men share number 22 in the 2018 edition of the Around the Rings Golden 25. Published since 1997, the Golden 25 is an annual review of people, events and issues expected to influence the Olympic Movement in the year ahead.
Perurena is in his second term leading the IWGA, which stages the World Games every four years. While some IWGA sports are Olympics recognized, the events and disciplines are not on the program. Thus the World Games are an event to incubate sports aiming for a spot on the Olympic program.
In Wroclaw, Poland in 2017, the World Games included new events in floorball, women's lacrosse, and Muay Thai.
With 3200 athletes from 102 nations in Wroclaw, the World Games is a much smaller scale event than the Olympics, a multi-sport event that’s a good fit with medium-sized cities. Birmingham, Alabama will host the 2021 World Games.
The profile of the World Games is rising, with the Olympic Channel airing the 2017 event, the TV signal produced by legendary host broadcast expert Manolo Romero.
Perurena and his colleagues will choose the sports by the end of April for Birmingham from the more than four dozen sports belonging to the IWGA. Perurena, 72, is an IOC member from Spain who holds his seat by virtue of his presidency of the International Canoe Federation. He is a member of the council for the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations.
Raffaele Chiulli, the Italian who is president of ARISF, oversees an association of 37 sports which have IOC recognition, the last recognition needed to enter the Olympic program.
Some of them have been selected for spots in upcoming Olympics, such as baseball/softball, karate, skateboard, sport climbing and surfing. They are the five ARISF sports which have a one-time spot on the program for the Tokyo Olympics. ARISF members will soon jockey to be chosen as additions to the program for Paris 2024.
Chiulli heads UIM, the international federation for powerboating. As ARISF president, Chiulli will serve a term as president of the Global Association of International Sport Federations.
