FIS Congress in Cancun to Vote on Hosts for Championships -- Federations Focus

(ATR) More than 900 delegates are in Cancun, Mexico this week for the 50th International Ski Congress.

Top of the agenda is determining the hosts for the FIS Ski Flying World Championships for 2020 and three world championships for 2021: FIS Alpine, Nordic and Freestyle Ski and Snowboard.

The FIS Council will vote on June 9 with the announcement of the winning bids being streamed live on the FIS website from the Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel at approximately 19:00 Cancun time (00:00 Friday GMT).

Three of the four championships have only one candidate. Planica, Slovenia for the 2020 Ski Flying, Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy for 2021 Alpine and Zhangjiakou, China for 2021 freestyle/snowboard face no challengers.

There are three applicants for the 2021 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with Planica, Oberstdorf, Germany and Trondheim, Norway in the running.

Among other agenda items for the82 national ski associations this week: finalizing next winter'scalendar and voting on some proposed rule changes, most notablychanging the Alpine downhill's start order to make it more TV friendly.

FINA World Aquatics Convention registration opens

Registration for the 4thFINA World Aquatics Convention (FWAC) in Windsor, Ontario, Canada is now open.

FINA says more than 1000 delegates will meet to network, share knowledge and develop business from December 3-5, 2016 at Caesars Windsor Resort and Convention Centre.

The Convention, as in 2014, is being held ahead of the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), which are being held from December 6-11 in Windsor.

The opening of registration for the Convention coincides with the announcement of the program for the 18th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress, which is a part of the Convention. Held every four years, the Congress reviews the latest scientific evidence in the field of aquatic athlete health and performance.

ARISF welcomes Tokyo 2020 additional sport decision

The Association of IOC Recognized International Sport Federations (ARISF) says it is pleased with the recommendation by the International Olympic Committee to include five new sports at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

"It is an honor for ARISF to play a crucial role within the Olympic Movement and to see the fruits of our continued efforts in working closely with the IOC which allowed us to achieve such an extraordinary result" said ARISF president Raffaele Chiulli.

At the IOC executive board meetings June 1-3 the IOC approved the five sports that had been short-listed by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee: baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing and surfing. The five sports are among the 35 ARISF federations recognized by the IOC.

The ability to add new sports to the Olympic program depending on the host city was created with the implementation of Olympic Agenda 2020 by the IOC. The package of reforms seeks to bring the Olympics into the modern era by adding sustainable and adaptable practices to hosting the Games. ARISF says it is proud to help achieve the objectives of Olympic Agenda 2020.

The IOC must now approve its recommendation at the IOC Session this August in Rio de Janeiro prior to the start of the Rio 2016 Olympics.
