(ATR)The first test event of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held from Saturday, August 2 to August 9 at Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro.
The Aquece Rio International Sailing Regatta will gather 324 athletes from 34 countries and some 215 boats, according to the organizing committee for the 2016 Games.
The sailing regattas begin on Sunday after the inspection of boats on Saturday. Around the Rings reporter Aaron Bauer will be on the scene in Rio this weekend to cover the test event.
Commonwealth Games
The 2014 Commonwealth Games kicked off in Glasgow, Scotland on July 23.Scotland hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1970 and 1986, both times in Edinburgh.
The Commonwealth Games has gathered athletes from over 70 nations.
The Games feature 17 different sports including badminton, cycling, diving, gymnastics, rugby sevens, table tennis, and wresting.Competition ends on Sunday.
Olympic Anniversaries
Monday marks the 86th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 1928 Summer Olympic Games as well as the 30th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
On Tuesday, in 1948, the Summer Olympics opened in London. Friday commemorates the 78th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the 1936 Berlin Olympics as well as the 38th anniversary of the opening of the 1976 Summer Games.
Sunday marks the 62nd anniversary of the closing ceremony of the 1952 Olympics and also the 34th anniversary of the closing of the 1980 Summer Games.
Countdown to 2014 YOG
The 2014 Youth Olympic Games officially open in Nanjing, China in less than 20 days.
The Nanjing Games -- being staged in the former Chinese capital located in eastern China’s Jiangsu province -- will gather 3,500 youth athletes between the ages of 15 to 18, representing 204 National Olympic Committees.
Competition for Nanjing 2014 will end August 28.
