The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) along with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism today launched the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Art Poster Competitions. The open call for the competition begins today followed by a briefing session on May 18 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (Seoul). Contestants will be able to submit their application from July 24-31. Winners will be announced in September, 2017.

The 10 winning designs for each Games will be displayed in various museums and art galleries such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and Gangneung Art Center. The individual artists or groups who create the ten winning entries will each receive ten million Korean Won as their prize. The winners of the Olympic competition will also have their work archived by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The aim of the campaign is to engage artists and give them a chance to have their creative work showcased on a global stage through the Games. It is also an important avenue to promote the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games by involving artists from different areas who have creative ideas and convey the messages and themes in a variety of ways.
The main themes and criteria that the judges will be looking for in the entries are:
- To reflect the values, ideals and vision of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games.
- To reflect the regional characteristics of Korea and PyeongChang.
- To express a festival of unity, communication and joy.
The designs must be a unique idea and must make PyeongChang 2018 stand out from the previous ones.
POCOG President LEE Hee-beom said, "We hope that the official Art Poster competition for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games will attract some of our top artists and give them an opportunity to create something special to celebrate and commemorate this wonderful global festival of sport and culture being hosted in our country next year.
"The winning designs will form an incredible collection that embodies our culture, our traditions, and our progress showing the world a glimpse of Korea through art. I look forward to seeing the entries and seeing the various ways which people express the Games through art."
The Olympic and Paralympic poster competitions are open to all those over the age of 19 and above as of May 2nd, 2017. Artists with a design background or the fine arts can take part in the open call. The window for submitting entries is between 24-31 July with a maximum of two designs per person for each competition.
