(ATR) The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, comments on the leadership crisis at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
In a letter to the DOSB leadership under President Alfons Hörmann, Bach called for "an extensive and full clarification regarding the accusations in question. From the conclusions would then be swiftly, if possible before the Olympic Games in Tokyo, to draw any necessary consequences". His comments in the letter were quoted by German radio station SWR,
Over two weeks ago, DOSB employees had criticized the leadership style in the umbrella organization in an open letter, speaking of a culture of fear. The DOSB would not deny or comment to Around the Rings about receiving the letter from Bach.
"Last Friday they commissioned the ethics committee around the former Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maiziere. Before the final report, the DOSB does not want to comment on the allegations," said a spokesman for the association.
Thomas Bach was the founding president of the DOSB from 2006 until his election as IOC president in 2013. "In these days, which mark the 15th anniversary of the founding of the DOSB, I am very concerned about its credibility and therefore its ability to function." Bach also stressed that he was writing as DOSB honorary president and not as IOC president.
The relationship between the IOC and DOSB is currently strained. After the IOC declared Brisbane to be the preferred candidate for the 2032 Summer Games and the Rhine-Ruhr bid thus no longer had a chance, Hörmann criticized the Olympic umbrella organization at the beginning of March. A letter from Kristin Kloster Assen, the chairwoman of the Future Host Commission, asking him to stop the misinformation went unheeded by Hörmann. Bach admonished him for this, pointing out that "unfortunately, the DOSB's position in international sports organizations has suffered further."
