(ATR)The resignation of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski may not be a problem for the Pan Am Games set for Lima in 2019.
Shortly after Kuczynski resigned as president of Peru, leaders of Panam Sports told Around the Rings that while they are concerned about the political situation they expect preparations for next year’s Games to continue as planned.
Carlos Nehuaus, president of the PanAm Games organizing committee – COPAL -- revealed to Around the Rings that he spoke with Panam Sports President Neven Ilic about two hours after the announcement. Neuhaus also spoke with Chilean Olympic Committee Pres. Miguel Angel Mujica, who helps monitor Games preparations.
"To both I gave the pertinent explanations," Nehuaus tells Around the Rings exclusively. He insisted preparations for the quadrennialevent will continue as planned until the opening on July 26, 2019.
"The Pan-American Games are a state commitment from the first attempt at the venue in 2009," he said.
Kuczynski resigned on Wednesday amid accusations of bribery and corruption, which he denies. In a televised address the president said he sent his letter of resignation to Congress. First Vice Pres. Martín Alberto Vizcarra will assume the presidency amid the crisis. He will arrive Thursday from Canada, where he is the ambassador.
Vizcarra supervised COPAL activities while he was Minister of Transport from July 2016 to May 2017. He established administrative coordination with COPAL, which included budgeting for the Pan Ams.
"Happily the new president is someone with whom I have worked for a long time. I worked with him and he supported us a lot, so I think he will continue to support us," Neuhaus continued.
Neuhaus also tells ATR that on Monday he reported to Congress about preparations.
"It was a positive presentation. At no time has anyone attacked us and even some congressmen congratulated us," he said."What you have to do is wait now for the new president to be installed and name your team."
