(ATR) The International Weightlifting Federation 2017 World Championships continue through next week in Southern California.

Around the Rings was on the scene for the federation's general assembly and the first day of competition in Anaheim.

The event is smaller than the 2015 event in Houston, partly because it is not an Olympic qualifier and partly because nine nations are under a one-year ban for doping. More than 300 competitors from 64 nations are participating. It is the second consecutive championship to be hosted in the United States.

Malaysia was supposed to host the competition, but last year said it could not meet the obligation. Phil Andrews, USA Wrestling CEO, says the organization never could have pulled off the event without help from the city of Anaheim.

Watch for more coverage from ATR's Gerard Farek, who will be on the scene at the event this weekend.
