AIBA Seeks Secretary General

(ATR) The International Boxing Association (AIBA) opens the search for someone to run the day-to-day operations of the troubled federation.

AIBA announced on Tuesday the position of secretary general. A newly established selection committee is to provide the AIBA board of directors with at least two candidates by March 22 in a process that "will be fully transparent and democratic".

The secretary general’s role includes overseeing AIBA’s administrative staff and managing the AIBA head office. The boxing federation has not had anyone in charge of daily operations on a permanent basis since Tom Virgets of the USA was fired as executive director in August of 2019.

The secretary general will report to the AIBA president and AIBA board of directors. The federation says it wants to fill the position as soon as possible. Those interested can find more information on the job and apply here.

Americas Continental Forum This Weekend

The second in a series of virtual continental forums will be held on Feb. 21 for the Americas.

AIBA president Umar Kremlev has set up the tour to give every national federation an opportunity to meet with AIBA leadership.

Africa was the first stop on Feb. 7. After the Americas, it will be Europe on Feb. 27, Oceania on March 6 and Asia on March 20.

World Olympic Boxing Qualifier Cancelled

The IOC Boxing Task Force (BTF) has cancelled the Final World Olympic Qualifier scheduled for Paris in June as part of a restructuring forced by the pandemic.

The 53 quota places (32 men and 21 women) to de decided at the Final World Olympic Qualifier will now be allocated equally across the four regions (Africa, Americas, Asia/Oceania and Europe) and all the weight categories, based on the BTF rankings at the conclusion of each continental qualifier.

The focus is now on the remaining two continental Olympic qualifying events. The completion of the European qualifier, initially scheduled for London in April, has been pushed back to June. The location and exact dates have yet to be confirmed.

The Americas Olympic Qualifier is currently scheduled to take place in Buenos Aires from May 10-16.

The African and Asian/Oceanian qualifiers have been completed.

The IOC Boxing Task Force took over the organization of boxing for Tokyo 2020 after the IOC suspended AIBA almost two years ago.
