Paris’ swimming pools will be eco-responsible by 2024. Jean-François Martins, deputy Mayor, has inaugurated an innovative heating system for pools and showers using heat recovered from wastewater. Another swimming pool is heated by a data centre.
The water in the Parisian sewers is at a temperature between 13°C and 20°C all year round, due to wastewater heat discharged by toilets and domestic facilities. Paris has developed a system which enables heat recovery to heat pools and showers of Aspirant Dunand pool (14th arrondissement).
The Butte aux Cailles swimming pool in the 13th arrondissement will be heated by data centre’s heat, during the next fall. Several hundred servers in the basement area, set up by a French start up, will be interconnected to a boiler. The system will enable the heat production of 235 MWh and a reduction of 45t of gas emissions per year.
These innovations are concrete implementations of Plan Nager à Paris (Paris’ swimming plan), passed in 2015. It expects to develop swimming for Parisians and visitors, but also to make swimming pools more environmentally-friendly. Jean-François Martins, deputy Mayor in charge of sports explains: "We wish to reduce the environmental impact and ecological footprint of these equipments. While reducing chemical products’ use".
Parisian swimming pools have become experimental hotbeds. Several have solar panels, others treat water by ozonisation, or use carbon filtering systems or stainless steel pools… Each new construction or renovation applies HQE (High Environmental Quality) standards.
Jean-François Martins adds: "It is an implementation of one of our 43 initiatives to make a better City through sport and the Olympic bid. We are very proud to announce that our swimming pools will be eco-responsible by 2024".
