Earlier this month the International World Games Association (IWGA) announced that it was joining UNFCCC’s Sports for Climate Action initiative. Now another step towards an even more environmental-friendly future has been taken by the IWGA, by becoming a member of Sport & Sustainability International (SandSI). SandSI is a not-for-profit international organisation based in Geneva, Switzerland, that leverages the power of sport to encourage mind and behaviour changes towards more responsible conduct, aligning with the Paris Agreement and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations Agenda 2030. The mission of SandSI is to accelerate sustainability in and through sport.
"Sustainability has always been one of the core values of The World Games. Now more than ever it is time to act for the environment, and of course we at The World Games want to be doing our share. This membership of Sport & Sustainability International is one more step on the way to reduce carbon emissions and waste in the upcoming years," says IWGA CEO Joachim Gossow.
"It is great to see the IWGA taking the next steps after signing up to the Sports for Climate Action Framework, and we are honoured to welcome them as our latest SandSI member", says SandSI CEO and Founding Director Geert Hendriks, "We look forward to supporting the IWGA and their members on their sustainability journey for The World Games 2022, as well as Chengdu 2025 through the SandSI Asia Hub."
SandSI’s goals for the sport sector are to be Carbon Neutral and Zero Waste, and to contribute to a 15% reduction in physical inactivity, by 2030. Of IWGA members, the International Fistball Association and World Flying Disc Federation are already members of SandSI. Other members include the New York Yankees, MLS (Major League Soccer), NHL (National Hockey League), and NBA (National Basketball Association) from the USA.
SandSI recently launched Football4Climate, a range of climate initiatives with and for the football industry, which will be expanded to other sports as part of a multi-year Sport4Climate programme. In parallel it is developing the SDG Sport Lab, an innovative platform to encourage, share and support the use of sport to contribute to the UN SDGs.
