(ATR) Hot on the heels of the Commonwealth Games, Glasgow has landed the 2018 European Aquatics Championships.

European Aquatics federation (LEN) president Paolo Barelli announced on Friday that Glasgow had secured the event.

The continental showcase, which includes swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and open water swimming, will visit Scotland for the first time.

"Everyone had the chance to watch the outstanding success of the Commonwealth Games," Barelli said when naming the winner. "Organizing that event at such a high level is a kind of guarantee for us for 2018."

Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Strathclyde Country Park and Edinburgh’s Royal Commonwealth Pool were the aquatics facilities for the Games.

Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson said LEN’s decision to choose Glasgow "is a direct legacy from hosting the Commonwealth Games where the swimming events were among the highlights with capacity crowds and incredible performances contributing to what have been declared the best ever Games."

Friday’s announcement means the U.K. will host the next two European Championships, with London staging the 2016 edition.
