(ATR) Organizers of the 2014 Chess Olympiad say they will accept the demands of the federation’s president, but not before they fired a few thinly-veiled criticisms at the organization.
FIDE, the world’s governing body for chess, had told organizers of the event in Tromsoe, Norway to accept registrations submitted by teams after the July 1 deadline. In a letter posted on FIDE’s website, Tromsoe 2014 was based on the "assumption" that that deadline was intended to be the actual deadline for registration.
"As soon as COT2014 became aware that there could be various interpretations of the regulations, we sought support for our interpretation that teams registered after this date could not participate," wrote the organizing committee’s chairman and CEO. The inspector general and vice president for FIDE supported their interpretation, they wrote.
They added that they do not agree that FIDE’s president can compel them to accept the registrations, but they will do so in a spirit of "good sportsmanship."
On Friday, FIDE’s president said the organizers had to allow teams to compete in the Olympiad, scheduled for Aug. 1 – 14. He said political concerns motivated the organizers to deny participation to the teams.
