La gimnasta española María Herranz murió “de forma súbita” a los 17 años por “una terrible meningitis” en la madrugada de este jueves, según informó el Ayuntamiento de Cabanillas del Campo, municipio en el que residía la deportista, en un comunicado.
Herranz era parte de la selección española de gimnasia en la modalidad trampolín y había participado del último Campeonato Mundial de la disciplina, realizado en Birmingham en noviembre del año pasado, en la prueba de cama elástica sincronizada junto a Carmen Hernandez. Además, María era estudiante en la Escuela de Arte ‘Elena de la Cruz’ y formaba parte del club Ruditramp de Cabanillas del Campo.
La Real Federación Española de Gimnasia (RFEG) lamentó “profundamente” el fallecimiento de Herranz: “Nuestro más sentido pésame a familiares y amigos. La gimnasia española siempre te recordará”, dijo en un mensaje en redes sociales, donde también se pronunciaron el Comité Olímpico Español (COE) y la ministra de Educación, Formación Profesional y Deporte, Pilar Alegría. “Un abrazo muy fuerte a la familia, amigos y compañeros de María Herranz”, señaló la titular de Deporte, unas palabras que también compartió el Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD).
El Ayuntamiento del municipio señaló que falleció “de forma súbita —en apenas 24 horas— a causa de una terrible meningitis”.
