El discóbolo lituano de 21 años Mykolas Alekna hizo historia el último domingo en el Oklahoma Throws Series de Ramona al batir el récord mundial masculino más longevo en el atletismo con una marca de 74,35 metros, superando los 74,08 m que el alemán Jürgen Schult mantenía vigente desde junio de 1986.
Además de quebrar, en el quinto intento, el registro de 37 años y más de 10 meses, el actual campeón europeo traspasó la barrera de los 70 metros en los seis lanzamientos, serie que también se consagró como la mejor de todos los tiempos de la disciplina.
La estremecedora cifra, que inicialmente había sido anunciada de 74,41 pero enseguida fue actualizada tras la medición con una cinta de acero, se encuentra sujeta a los habituales procesos de ratificación. Curiosamente, Alekna concretó la hazaña un día después de que la cubana Yaime Pérez arrojara 73,09 m, el lanzamiento femenino más destacado desde 1989.
El flamante récordman, que el domingo anterior había vapuleado el récord europeo sub-23 en Berkeley, es hijo del doble campeón olímpico Virgilijus Alekna, quien, además de coronarse en Sydney 2000 y Atenas 2004, conserva la plusmarca olímpica de 69,89 metros (2004) y el tercer mejor lanzamiento histórico, de 73,88 m en 2000, dos años antes del nacimiento de Alekna.
Tras la gesta en Estados Unidos, el récord mundial masculino más longevo del atletismo -al aire libre- pasó a pertenecerle a Yuri Sedykh, en lanzamiento de martillo y activo desde agosto de 1986. Sin distinción de sexos, la plusmarca más longeva data del 26 de junio de 1983, día en que la checa Jarmila Kratochvílová corrió los 800 metros del Mundial de Munich en 1:53.28.
