En la pista anexa del Estadio Drake de Los Ángeles se produjo el sábado 27 de mayo un impacto mundial al momento en que una bola de acero de 7,260 kilos se desprendió del cuello de Ryan Crouser, flotó en el aire y se incrustó 23,56 metros más adelante para establecer un nuevo récord mundial en lanzamiento de bala.
El estadounidense de 30 años, campeón olímpico en Río 2016 y Tokio 2020, batió con su performance la anterior mejor marca histórica en la disciplina, los 23,37 que él mismo supo conseguir en las pruebas olímpicas de Eugene en 2021, quebrando por entonces el récord de Randy Barnes de 21 años de vigencia.
Además de la gesta en el cuarto lanzamiento, Crouser escribió una página indeleble más en su dorada carrera al completar la más sobresaliente serie para un especialista en bala: 23,23 – 23,31 – 22,94 – 23,56 – 22,80 – 22,86 metros. El peor de todos sus lanzamientos, los 22,80 mts., le habría alcanzado para ganar la medalla dorada en todos los Juegos Olímpicos a excepción de los últimos, que él conquistó con 23.30 metros.
“Siempre competí contra mí mismo, mi objetivo es batir mi marca personal. Es una sensación tan especial decir que hoy soy mejor que nunca”, declaró el oriundo de Portland, Oregon, favorito indiscutido para el Mundial de Budapest de este año y para París 2024.
Crouser deberá aguardar que se valide su marca ya que en dos oportunidades le anularon récords mundiales por irregularidades técnicas y más aún a sabiendas que desde la temporada invernal de 2022 viene implementando una nueva forma de lanzar, la cual según él le hizo un “clic”.
El podio en Los Ángeles, sexta etapa de oro de la gira continental, también estuvo integrado por el neozelandés y medallista de bronce en Rio 2016 y Tokio 2020 Tom Walsh (22.12 mts.) y el norteamericano Payton Otterdahl, quien obtuvo su mejor marca personal, 21.99 mts.
