Tokio, como otras sedes olímpicas, registrará una larga lista de deportistas olimpicos “no nativos” en los países que representan.
El atletismo quizás es el deporte que con más recurrencia se observarán estas presencias.
En este mapa de nuevas nacionalidades deportivas que involucra a un nutrido número de naciones, un reciente análisis revela que 22 deportistas cubanos integran delegaciones de 10 paises en los actuales Juegos Olimpicos.
La gran mayoría de este grupo está formado por atletas que pertenecieron al sistema deportivo estatal de la isla. Varios de ellos abandonaron delegaciones deportivas mientras competían en el extranjero.
Paralelamente la expedición oficial de Cuba, llegada de La Habana a Tokio, es la más reducida que haya presentado la nación caribeña desde los Juegos de México – 68.
Su nómina está integrada por 69 deportistas en 64 pruebas con la pretensión de ubicarse entre los 20 primeros paises del cuadro final de medallas , un pronóstico que no pocos ponen en duda al considerar que el deporte en ese pais enfrenta un importante declive.
La “legión extranjera” cubana ha llegado a Tokio bajo las siguientes banderas de acuerdo al sitio “Cubalite”:
Azerbaiyán: Lorenberto Alfonso (Boxeo) y Lorenzo Sotomayor (Boxeo). Brasil: Yoandy Leal (Voleibol) Chile: Yasmani Acosta (Lucha grecorromana) y Arley Méndez (Halterofilia). España: Orlando Ortega (Atletismo), Enmanuel Reyes (Boxeo) y Lois Maikel Martínez (Atletismo). República Dominicana : Raúl Valdés (Béisbol). Estados Unidos : Yarisel Ramírez (Boxeo), Ariel Torres (Kárate) y Yeisser Ramírez (Esgrima).
Italia: Osmany Juantorena (Voleibol), Frank Chamizo (Lucha libre), Abraham Conyedo (Lucha libre) y Yadisleidis Pedroso (Atletismo). Polonia: Wilfredo León (Voleibol). Portugal: Daymaro Salina (Balonmano), Víctor Iturriza (Balonmano), Alexis Borges (Balonmano), Pedro Pablo Pichardo (Atletismo) Turquía: Yasmani Copello (Atletismo)
Seis de ellos ya estuvieron cinco años atrás en los Juegos de Río. Sotomayor fue subcampeón olímpico. Ya subió al ring en Tokio y perdió en su primera presentación ante el welter de Georgia, Eskerkhan Madiev por RSC.
Ortega fue medalla de plata olimpica en 2016 en los 110 metros con vallas, al igual que Juantorena. Chamizo fue bronce olimpico.
En los casos de Yarisel Ramírez y Ariel Torres, llegaron niños a Estados Unidos de las manos de sus padres. Ramírez, a pesar de perder en su debut el 25 de julio, en el torneo olimpico de boxeo, ha hecho historia como la primera boxeadora cubana en una cita olimpica.
Alrededor de una decena de deportistas de descendencia cubana forman parte de la delegación olimpica de Estados Unidos de 613 atletas.
