Toshiba said its full-year net profit fell about 34 percent with one-off costs weighing on its bottom line as the Japanese firm reportedly eyes French giant Alstom's power-grid business. The fall in Toshiba's net earnings to 50.83 billion yen (500 million USD) in the fiscal year to March was chiefly due to the cost of exiting an optical disc drive business jointly run with South Korea's Samsung. (ATR) Toshiba and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) announced plans to broadcast in 8K high-definition resolution by the 2020 Olympics.

The new resolution is 16 times clearer than current 2K high-definition broadcasts.

Both companies currently have compression software to transmit data in 8K resolution but are working to transmit the data on smartphones, personal computers, and the giant screens that will be used at the 2020 Olympics.

South Korea telecom companies have marketed a 4K transmission solution, something which Japanese companies hope to accomplish soon.

Toshiba hopes to market its 4K technology, which could then drive down the price for its 8K hardware-based solutions. Currently, that hardware runs around $385,000 a unit.
